In 2005 the Loddon Shire Council made a grant to the Families
and Friends of Waanyarra to carry out maintenance to the fences
surrounding the Historic Cemetery . The previous work carried
out by FAFOW is a fine example to other communities of what can
be done to enable descendants to preserve a heritage site and
to identify individual graves.
The front gates and picket fence were repaired and painted and
the post and rail fence stained and treated with preservative.
However, the post and wire fences on the remaining boundaries
still require renovation (replacement being beyond our resources
at this time). Funds are still in hand to carry out this maintenance
and if there are volunteers in the Waanyarra district with fencing
expertise, George Swinburne would be pleased to hear from you
with a view to organising a "workparty" over one or
two days to carry out this work.
Initially if someone could attend at the Cemetery and provide
a short written assessment of the extent of the work required,
what material is considered necessary and an estimate of the cost,
this would greatly expedite the process.
There were a number of people whose contribution to the 2005
Reunion helped make it another successful day.
Central Goldfields Concert Band who provided an enjoyable musical
program and a donation was made to the Band of funds collected
from those who attended.
Ian Morse of Waanyarra Nugget Jewellery who donated a gold nugget
pendant which was the first prize in the Raffle held to defray
the costs of the day. Other prizes were wine donated by Marong
Vineyard (who had a marquee and sold wine at the Reunion), John
Booth (who also assisted with transport of equipment for the Reunion)
and George Swinburne.
Department of Sustainability and Environment who provided a Forestry
Display and personnel to oversee the day and answer queries.
John & Jo Nairn, Maureen Swinburne, Robyn Booth, Goldie Pennefather
and Rob Hawthorne who assisted in selling raffle tickets.
A number who attended who were able to provide memorabilia for
display. This is of great interest to attendees, so save up anything
of interest and bring it to the 2008 Reunion.
Ken Morton for his continued facilitation of the Waanyarra website
Ken Morton put together the fantastic web site which has proved
to be an invaluable source for genealogists and amateurs tracing
their ancestors who at some time had a connection with Waanyarra.
Ken maintains his interest and association with Waanyarra by continuing
to facilitate provision of the website.
There have been numerous enquiries over the past two years for
information on our pioneer families and their descendants and
hopefully with over a years advance notice many of those who have
to travel long distances will be able to plan to attend the 2008
reunion. The following weekend to our reunion is Easter Sunday
and you might plan a trip to include the Bendigo Easter Fair.
David Gordon who maintains indexes of names of individuals and
families in the district that have appeared in newspapers that
have circulated in Central Victoria and Peter Mattews who also
has an extensive database on families, have both given invaluable
help to those tracing relatives. It is pleasing to have been able
to assist in this regard.
If you have interesting stories on your Waanyarra Pioneer Family
along the lines of those that already appear on the website, they
can be submitted to George Swinburne for approval.
